History: The only child of Elpida and Nestor Tragoudi, Thalassa’s life was fairly straightforward. She was raised in Greece until her tenth year, when her parents moved to London for her father to pursue a Ministry job. She was accepted to Hogwarts, sorted into Ravenclaw, and graduated respectably high in her class. Because of her weak English in her 1st year, she was mistaken for shy and kept to her small circle of friends (should not well known to the Marauders). Thalassa was not pleased about moving to England at all, and didn't become fluent in the language until nearly her seventh year.

Thalassa's family is very private, although she has a multitude of cousins. They all hail from the tiny Greek island of Tenedos (called Bozcaada by modern Muggles), and there the witches and wizards keep the history of Greek magic. Most have records detailing their ancestry to mythological figures like Leda, the sirens, Theseus, Daedalus, Europa, and more. Thalassa's name means "the sea" in her historical tongue; this is due to her family line being the guardians of the mythological chariot of Poseidon (hidden there during the Trojan war, in The Iliad). She is required to return there each summer.

Despite the fact that she grew up on an island, Thalassa is deathly afraid of the water. As a small child, she was attacked and nearly drowned by sirens (mermaids to English wizards) off the coast of Tenedos. She will not venture near the lake by Hogwarts.

Already fascinated by prophecies and runes she had learned in her homeland, she was an avid follower of the events surrounding You-Know-Who, although her family ignored it as an 'English problem." She aspired to become an Auror because of Voldemort's reign of terror, but failed two levels, Charms and Transfiguration. After the testing, her parents strongly encouraged her to marry, but she defied them on purpose, instead taking a job inside the Ministry of Magic, with their Department of International Magical Cooperation. This caused a rift in her family because of her duties; it's not clear how that has been mended.

After only a few years, she was asked by Dumbledore to take the Ancient Runes position when her own previous teacher left the post. She studies in her free time; books on runes, potions and prophecies, mostly. She has a long-term project on the carvings of the Temple of Athene Pronaos, at Delphi. She won't tell anyone much, but she believes some of the prophesies there might refer to the current war.

Personality: Thalassa is very inquisitive, and is always fascinated by new areas of study. She enjoys her position of teacher immensely, but wishes she could be more active "in the field" as it were. She is trifle impatient and definitely has a smart mouth. In the quiet between classes or while grading student work, she has taken to talking to herself. She is a voracious reader with an intelligent mind, and subscribes to most wizarding papers, including those of lesser repute, like the Quibbler. She takes her Runes work very seriously, and is always appalled when students are bored by it. A frequenter of the Three Broomsticks, she keeps a lively friendship with Rosemerta but is somewhat jealous of anyone she suspects of being more involved with the fight against Voldemort. She admired McGonagall, and Dumbledore; is prone to asking Hagrid strange questions about his creature collection (a long running research project on creatures in early runes); takes pity on Trelawney; and is generally appreciative of the students and faculty if they show a passing interest in her work. For this reason, she thinks highly of Hermione Granger, although she knows little about Harry or Ron, having neither in her class. She watches out for Ravenclaws but does not appear to favor them with points. Her humor is dry and somewhat cutting now and then, and can seem a little sarcastic, but that is mainly due to her overly proper English. She has a tendency to be slightly cheeky. She also has a secret passion for Quidditch, being a big fan of the Kenmare Kestrels (but only admitting to Oliver Wood that she liked Puddlemere United, too).

Sometimes they get on people's nerves, because they don't have as many interpersonal skills as they seem to think they have, but it's hard to stay mad at a Ravenclaw Sagittarian for very long. They're just too strange.
